As an employer, you must protect your employees and visitors from harm. This includes taking reasonable steps to protect them from injury and illness, and now this also includes COVID-19.
COVID-19 is transmitted from person to person by an infected individual touching a surface and contaminating with the virus which another person then picks up by touching the contaminated surface. Another way COVID-19 is transmitted is when an infected person speaks, laughs, coughs or sneezes and the droplets land on surrounding surfaces which others then touch.
A way of preventing or limiting the spread of the virus in your workplace is by keeping your workplace clean and promoting frequent handwashing.
In this post, we have devised our COVID-19 cleaning checklist so that you can maintain a COVID secure environment for your employees and visitors.
Use the Correct PPE
Wear disposable gloves to clean and disinfect and discard after use. Always remember to wash your hands after removing the gloves.
Clean First and Disinfect After
Cleaning with soap and water reduces the number of germs, dirt, and impurities on the surface. Then, disinfecting kills any remaining germs on surfaces, which further reduces any risk of spreading the virus.
Use the Correct Disinfecting Products
When disinfecting your workplace against the virus, it’s essential to ensure that you are using the correct products, as not all cleaning products are effective.
The World Health Organisation states that: “bleach may be used at a recommended concentration of 0.1% or 1,000ppm. Alcohol at 70-90% can also be used for surface disinfection. Surfaces must be cleaned with water and soap or detergent first to remove dirt, followed by disinfection.”
Create a Cleaning Schedule
Carry out routine cleaning in the following areas multiple times per day:
Walls, floors, windowsills, light switches, doors, including handles, toilets, wash hand basins, cupboards, shelving, sinks, taps, toilets, tables, food prep areas, work surfaces, computers, printers, chairs, plates, cups and cutlery.
